Meaning: If, when

Formation:

Verb-てform + は
Noun + では
いadj (-い) + くては
なadj + では

Example sentences

大きな声で話しては魚が逃げてしまう。
Ookina koe de hanashite wa sakana ga nigete shimau.
If you speak too loud, the fishes will swim away.

料理がまずくては誰も来ませんよ。
Ryouri ga mazukute wa dare mo kimasen yo.
If the food is nasty no one will come.

イギリスの住民はたった6500万人ですから、euの強い交渉力の外にいては、経済的に苦境に陥るだろうと思えます。
It seems to me that the uk, with only 65 million inhabitants, will suffer economically outside the negotiating strength of the eu.
