Meaning: At once; right away; promptly; on the spur of the moment

Formation:

とっさに + action

Example sentences

秘密の計画が彼女にばれそうになり、とっさにうそをついてしまった。
She was about to know about my secret plan, so i told a lie at once.
Himitsu no keikaku ga kanojo ni baresou ni nari, tossa ni uso o tsuite shimatta.

言い過ぎた、とみんながとっさにそう思った。
Everyone knew instantly he’d gone too far.
Iisugita, to minna ga tossa ni sou omotta.

彼はとっさに頭を働かせた。
His quick brain was working.
Kare wa tossa ni atama o hatarakaseta.

「そんなことないよ。」彼はとっさに答えた。
“of course not,” he said quickly.
